Joint Statement of Human Rights Organizations Condemning the Death Sentence of Pakhshan Azizi

Sep 9, 2024: Justice for Iran, along with 25 other human rights organizations, strongly condemned the death sentence of  Pakhshan Azizi, a Kurdish woman activist and social worker, in a joint statement. This verdict represents a blatant violation of human rights principles, international conventions, and a systematic repression of freedom of speech and the right to life. We express grave concern for all political prisoners facing death sentences in the Islamic Republic of Iran and call for the immediate and unconditional revocation of this inhumane punishment.

Pakhshan Azizi, known for her dedication to promoting women’s rights and social justice, now faces the death penalty due to her activism. Following her arrest, Azizi was subjected to violent treatment and torture, including months in solitary confinement, without access to her family or legal counsel, as part of a forced confession process. Her subsequent death sentence was handed down in an unfair trial, depriving her of basic legal rights.

We demand Pakhshan Azizi’s immediate release and call upon the international community, human rights organizations, and global governments to take urgent action against this unlawful sentencing. This case is part of a broader effort by the Iranian regime to suppress peaceful dissent, particularly in light of movements like “Women, Life, Freedom.” Only through coordinated global pressure can we halt the systemic violation of human rights in Iran.
