Job title: Finance Officer

Contract: Permanent

Justice for Iran is seeking a Finance Officer to support its operational activities. Preferably based in London, the Finance Officer will be responsible for the administration of the finances of Justice for Iran, mainly including:

  • Supervising all financial matters and processing all day-to-day financial operations:
  • Managing the NGO’s bank account(s);
  • Overseeing funding flow;
  • Managing accounting softwares;
  • Processing payments, particularly ensuring timely payment of salaries, and all suppliers/partners’ invoices;
  • Ensuring that all transactions are properly coded to respective grants, and that budget lines are accurate;
  • Keeping record and supporting documentation of all transactions:
  • preparing a record of capital introduced and all undertaken financial transactions;
  • maintaining records of all receipts and payments of cash;
  • maintaining records of invoices issued and received;
  • reconciling balances monthly/annually with the bank statements.


  • Supporting budgeting and reporting processes:
  • Assisting project managers in preparing budgets, including proposal budgets and annual consolidated budgets;
  • Drafting budget and budget narrative for project proposals, answering donors’ financial queries in the process of fundraising and providing them with any financial related document they may require;
  • Preparing quarterly and final financial reports, and ensuring timely submission to donors; Dealing with all queries and comments about financial reports;
  • Maintaining an up-to-date allocation table/overview of funding of shared/support costs and preparing monthly allocation of staffing and other shared costs;
  • Performing monthly reporting of expenditure against approved budget lines;
  • Ensuring maintenance of proper and accurate accounting records and archiving of supporting documents.


  • Ensuring compliance with standard procedures, local government regulations and donor requirements, and particularly:
  • Ensuring that grant financial management is done effectively and in a timely manner;
  • Ensuring compliance with UK regulations and obligations, including taxes, social security, statutory accounts/ annual accounts to the government (HMRC);
  • Supervising any audit required by law or by donors, and preparing all required documentation for financial audits;
  • Submitting the annual statutory accounts to the Companies House and other UK regulatory mechanisms;
  • Being the focal point for auditors to receive communication and provide necessary information.


  • Sharing knowledge:
  • Training support staff and/or relevant staff on day to day processing of financial transactions (i.e. invoices, expense claims and bank payments);
  • Assisting project managers and directors in any task including a financial aspect.


Essential Competencies

  • A minimum of three years directly relevant work experience in a similar position in an NGO;
  • University degree in accounting, finance, business administration or related field;
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and accounting databases;
  • Advanced proficiency in at least one accounting software, preferably Xero;
  • Experience of accurately and efficiently processing financial transactions and reconciling data, and a good understanding of financial software and systems;
  • Fluent spoken and written English language;
  • Ability to work independently and efficiently;
  • Ability to work in a multi-cultural environment as part of a team, and excellent communication skills that will allow you to resolve discrepancies through discussion with colleagues and external parties, and to put forward improvements in controls to prevent these reoccurring;
  • Highly efficient and organised, with an ability to multi-task;
  • Proven ability to work under pressure and meeting deadlines;
  • Proven ability to maintain highest level of confidentiality regarding work-related information and data;
  • Honesty and strong commitment ;
  • Flexibility and understanding of the context of human rights work;
  • Accuracy and reliability;
  • Ability to understand and support the aims, objectives and values of JFI and reflect them in all aspects of work.


Desirable Competencies:

  • Working experience with relevant EU/US donors, and deep understanding of donor requirements and guidelines;
  • Empathy with victims of human rights abuse;
  • Ability to think and work strategically, creatively, and under pressure.



Reporting: The position reports to the Operational Manager.

Hours: This is a full-time position at 35 hours a week.

Location: The position is based at the JFI office in London. JFI has a flexible working policy that allows for some working from home.

Compensation: Depending on experience.

Probation: There is a three-month probationary period.

Holiday:  There are 25 days of holiday per year, in addition to UK public holidays.

Status: The ideal candidate will have the right to live and work in the UK.
