Justice For Iran Statement at The HRC55 Informal Debate on The Resolution For Renewal Of The Mandates Of UN Special Rapporteur And Fact Finding Mission For Iran

11 March 2024- Geneva-  Justice for Iran thanks the core group for the draft resolution and welcomes the renewal of both the Special Rapporteur and the Fact-Finding Mission mandates.

Their work has been instrumental for the civil society, and we will continue to submit information to these mechanisms to shed light on the reality of human rights in Iran.

While we understand the reasons behind the technical renewal for the resolution, we would have liked to see key substantial elements covered, especially at a time when the mandated experts have established that the human rights violations documented during the crackdown on protests in Iran amount to crimes against humanity.

Supporting and building upon the work of the Fact-Finding Mission is crucial to end impunity in Iran, including through further accountability measures such as the principle of universal jurisdiction.

Women and girls continue to be subjected to further punishment using laws and policies that effectively isolate those defying compulsory hijab, and the harassment against them has intensified through a high tech. surveillance system.

Another concerning issue that could have found its place in the text is the continuous attempts by the authorities to actively silence the truth, by targeting victims, their families, as well as journalists and NGOs documenting the violations. We have also seen serious harassment, cyber-attacks, disinformation campaigns, and even assassination plots, against journalists and NGOs abroad.

We would also like to take this opportunity to let you know that we will be launching a database of 35 000 videos of the protests, available upon request, that we believe will be useful in uncovering evidence of crimes against humanity and other crimes committed by the authorities. It also provides context on the multidimensional nature of the Women, Life, Freedom movement.

Thank you very much!
