The late UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in Iran Asma Jahangir
Justice for Iran, March 15: In a report issued before her death, the late UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in Iran Asma Jahangir expressed concern over reported desecration sites believed to be mass graves of political prisoners who were summarily executed in 1988 in Ahwaz and Mashhad.
In her report, Ms Jahangir urges Government to ‘ensure that locations believed to be the site of mass graves are persevered and protected,” and calls on the government of Iran to “undertake thorough and independent investigation into the 1988 massacres.”
Jahangir devoted a chapter of the report, which was written shortly before her death, to the 1988 mass killing of political prisoners. The report is due to be released by the UN Human Rights Council and makes reference to numerous accounts of the 1988 disappearance of thousands of political prisoners, including children under the age of 18.
In her reort, the late UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights in Iran emphasized the right of families to know the truth about the fate of their relatives, the right to justice and the right to compensation.
She referred to the letter sent to her by 150 family members about the harassment and persecution they have faced in their quest for the truth about the killing of their relatives in 1988.
Justice for Iran and Amnesty International issued a joint statement about the destruction of the mass graves of political prisoners executed in Mashhad and Ahwaz in 1988.
